Akitas are a large dog breed that originated in the mountains of Northern Japan. They are known to be a very strong, independent and dominate dog breed. They are usually quite aloof about strangers but extremely affectionate towards their family members. They are very loyal to their families and can be extremely possessive of them for that reason. This makes it so that it is very important to train Akitas well.
Akitas are very territorial about their property and even about their humans. This is what makes them very reserved towards strangers. They have a tendency to act like cats even though they are indeed, dogs. It is not uncommon for an Akita to clean its face after eating, to groom itself while being in its kennel or to be fussy around the house. They are also known to be intolerant of dogs of the same gender and often of other dogs in general.
Akitas are known in Japan to be one of the oldest dog breeds. Since Akitas are a large and powerful dog breed, they are not recommended for first time dog owners. They need to be trained well from a very young age. This dog breed has been targeted in many countries as a dangerous dog breed. Usually they are good with children and if an Akita has been properly trained and socialized they should be accepting of non-threatening strangers.
