The Beagle is a very popular small dog. It is a part of the hound dog family. Beagles are known for their amazing sense of smell which they developed as they were primarily bred for tracking hare, rabbit and other small animals. These days while Beagles are still used as detection dogs to prohibit agricultural imports, they are also an extremely friendly and loving house pet.
Beagles are known for being even-tempered dogs that really get along with everyone. They are quite calm and have a gentle disposition. They are determined and intelligent dogs who are very loyal to their masters and ideal for families with children. They are great watch dogs but not so good guard dogs.
The Beagles were bred to have a hunting dog instinct and they are a member of the hound dog family. This means that they cannot easily be trusted with other smaller canines, rabbits, hamsters and other small animals unless they have been socialized and the Beagle knows that these dogs are part of your family. It might beneficial to buy some animal scents and play tracking games with them to satisfy that instinct.
