The Brittany is a dog breed that hails from the northwest of France. The Brittany breed was bred to be gun dogs that are now a days primarily used for bird hunting and for retrieving game. Although many people assume that they are part of the Spaniels, the Brittany characteristics can be closely compared to that of a pointer of setter dog. They are usually athletic, compact, energetic and solidly built without being heavy set.
Since Brittany was bred to be a hunting dog, they are very intelligent and easy to train. They are also very sweet natured. Brittany is known for being a lot more sensitive to correction while training than the other hunting breeds. This is why it is important to give them a lot more positive affirmation and gentle correction. Harsh corrections are unnecessary and will not get results.
Because Brittanys are athletic dogs, it is important to give them at least some vigorous exercise every single day. This means that they need to be able to get frequent exercise and should have some room for them to run around freely. It is important to have a fenced in yard for them and usually, apartments are not suitable for Brittanys. Sometimes this breed will get the reputation of being crazy or uncontrollable without proper exercise.
