Chow Chow 101

The Chow Chow is a very powerful dog that hails from China. They are often referred as the ‘puffy lion dog’. This makes sense given the fluffy exterior and extremely strong build that the Chow Chow possesses. The Chow Chow is a dog breed with a sturdy exterior, square profile, a broad skull and small, triangular, erect ears. They have a very dense, double-coat which is thicker at the neck and gives it a distinctive mane appearance.

Chow Chow Personality

Although the Chow Chow dog breed is an excellent pet, they usually display aloofness towards strangers. Their loyalty makes them extremely protective of their owners and their property. This makes it important to train a Chow Chow. Training a Chow Chow can be hard because they can be stubborn and need an experience owner and lots of positive reinforcement. They need regular but not excessive exercise to remain healthy.

Chow Chow Considerations

Owning a Chow Chow can raise the cost of home insurance for home owners because many companies and local jurisdictions consider Chow Chows high-risk dogs. That being said, in a study that was published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, out of 238 fatalities related to dog bites from 1979 to 1998, Chow Chow were responsible for only eight. The Chow Chow’s behavior will depend on its training and circumstances.
