The German Shepherd is a large dog breed that is part of the herding group. Their intelligence, trainability, and obedience make them a preferred dog breed for many who are looking for working dogs. They have been used constantly as search and rescue dogs and in various police and military roles. They are so trainable that they are also constantly used in acting! They are the second most popular dogs in the United States.

German Shepherds are highly active dogs that are self-assured, confident, willing to learn, and eager to have a sense of purpose in life. They are very curious dogs that excel in advanced obedience and agility training. In fact, since they need vigorous mental and physical exercise as working dogs, it is recommended that German Shepherd are trained from a very young age.

German Shepherd Considerations

German Shepherds that are well-trained and socialized from an early age are very safe dogs. That being said, it is important to keep in mind that the German Shepherd is a strong dog that must be kept under close observation. They can get possessive and territorial towards their property and loved ones. They need to be able to follow commands closely, especially as they encounter new people, animals and places.
