The Shih Tzu is a very small dog with a short muzzle and large, dark eyes. They have smooth and silky, long, double coats. They might be small dogs but they are full of character and spirit. They are known for being loyal and love to hang out with their human friends! Anytime spent being the center of attention is time well spent for the Shih Tzu. A very noticeable feature of the Shih Tzu is their under-bite, which is a required breed feature.
Shih Tzu Personality
The Shih Tzu temperament is known to be loyal, affectionate, outgoing and alert. This makes them a really good option for a watch dog, even though they were not bred for this purpose. They need to be properly trained and socialized at an early age so that they can learn to obey basic commands. Due to their friendly nature, a Shih Tzu can easily get along with other dogs and children in the household.
Shih Tzu Considerations
There are many different health issues that have been associated with Shih Tzu dogs. Some of these are hereditary. Some of these diseases include hypothyroidism, intervertebral disc disease and breathing problems. Shih Tzus have a lot of breathing problems that are related to the shape of their head and face. This is not uncommon for dogs with short noses. They can also be epileptic.
