Havanese Shedding 101
No, Havanese do not shed. This is because they do not have fur. Instead they have hair like us human beings.
Since the Havanese do not shed, they are considered a hypoallergenic dog breed.
Just because the answer to the question do Havanese shed is no does not mean that they do not need to be groomed on a regular basis. While you will not find fur all over the house, on your clothes and all over your bed, their hair will continue to grow as long as you let it go. If you let it grown out, be prepared to deal with a long train of hair following your Havanese (and you!) everywhere!
This means that proper grooming and hair care is necessary for the Havanese. The longer you keep your dog’s coat, the more high maintenance it will be. Your Havanese dog will need to be brushed daily to prevent matting and to remove the dead hairs.
If you want to avoid matting, you can opt for your Havanese’s coat to be clipped. This will make it easier for you to care for their coat as well. If you do choose to keep the coat of the Havanese long, you will need to thoroughly brush and also comb out their hair at least twice a week. There is also a specific lotion that is available in the market that can keep your Havanese’s hair from splitting.
You can either brush out your Havanese’s coat or keep it corded. If you choose to have a corded coat for your Havanese that is a different kind of coat that will require special care as well. Dogs are not born with corded coats. It is a special hairstyle that you are choosing for your dog.
It is also important to remember that the Havanese might not be considered a dog that sheds but they do have hair that acts just like that of humans. Human beings shed hair all the time and not during a specific time of the year. Just as you will find your own hair on your furniture, in your bathroom and occasionally at other places around the house, you should also except to find your Havanese hair in certain places! If you have a Havanese with a white coat, be prepared to find more of the silky white hair rather than your own hair on the couch. So again, they might not “officially” shed, but it would be a lie to say that you will never find any of their hair lying around in a variety of places. They just do not shed to the extent that a regular dog does.
There is a certain breed of Havanese that is born with short hair. They are called the Shavenese. This kind of Havanese does shed since their coat is more of a fur than hair. They are a little bit more like the average dog. They are not considered to be hypoallergenic and thus, are not recommended for dog owners who might have an allergic reaction.
