If you are looking for a dog that is not going to shed all over your house, your couch and your carpet, not the mention your clothes, Shih Tzu is the perfect dog for you. Shih Tzu can be a little deceptive because they have luxurious coats that they are known for worldwide.

Shih Tzus have hair instead of fur. There are two differences between hair and fur. First of all, fur does not really grow long but hair does. Secondly, fur is a little thicker usually than fur. This does not mean that hairy dogs do not shed. They can still shed. They still do need to be groomed. It is just for different reasons and usually at different times.

Back in the day, Shih Tzus had long hair that would flow to the ground. It would be pinned back and glide along the floor along their behind like a glamorous train. They could win Best In Show award any day by showing off this coat!

Nowadays, Shih Tzu coat needs to be kept very prim and proper. This means that even though the answer to the question, “Do Shih Tzu Shed?” is not really, you still need to take your Shih Tzu from grooming regularly or groom them at home. If the hair is left uncut, it will grow all the way to the ground. This does not mean it will shed, but it does mean that you will need to take care of it very carefully.

The only time you might be experiencing a Shih Tzu shedding is when they are still getting rid of their puppy coat. This usually happens until the time the Shih Tzu turns one. This is completely normal so when you see it happening, do not worry at all. It is temporary. While the Shih Tzu sheds it’s puppy coat, you can try to brush it out weekly with a soft bristled brush to keep all the dead hair out of your furniture and clothes!

Sometimes, Shih Tzus, just like other dogs will shed when they are having a problem with their diet. This could mean that they are not getting all the nutrients that they need to have in order for them to lead a healthy and happy life. If you feel like this might be the case, or are not sure if this is the case, I suggest you take your Shih Tzu that is shedding to the vet since they would know best about these things.
