Small dog breeds are the babies of the dog world. Everyone loves the small dog breeds because they are so cute and cuddly. Yes, the small breeds melt everyone’s hearts.

It is very important that human beings do some research on a dog breed and their requirements before they decide to adopt or buy them, whether the dog belongs to a small dog breed, a medium dog breed or a large dog breed. Just because your dog is tiny doesn’t mean you can keep him or her stuck in an apartment all day.

Small Dogs Can Be a Large Responsibility!

There is a rumor that small dog breeds are “easier” to live with and maintain. This is absolutely incorrect in all sorts of ways. Just because a dog is labeled as a small dog breed does not mean that they do not need much exercise in their lives. In fact, sometimes small dog breeds need to be able to have at least one hour of active time with their humans or other dogs in order for them to maintain a healthy mental and physical state. Our dog, Bunk, falls into that category, and despite going to day care for twelve hours a day and five days a week, he has plenty of energy remaining. We still need to walk him a couple of times a week to keep him calm and anxiety free.

There is another rumor that small dog breeds are easier to groom. This, also, is absolutely incorrect. Just like large dog breeds and medium dog breeds, individual dogs that fall under the small dog breed category have different kinds of hair or fur that they will shed differently depending on their own genes.

Small dog breeds are prone to getting the small dog syndrome. This is when a dog tries to make up for it’s small size by being dominant and stubborn. It is very important that owners train their small dog breeds from a very young age to make sure that this does not happen with their dogs! They need to learn and understand that the human is the leader of the pack. You need to be confident around small dog breeds because they need to have that consistent figure in their lives.

Finally, there are a lot of humans out there who do not trust the abilities of the small dog breeds and judge them given the way they look! As a small dog breed owner, we feel it necessary to defend the small dog breeds’ position. Small dog breeds, such as Dachshunds and Chihuahuas can be amazing watch dogs because they are mostly barkers. They might not be guard dogs but they will make enough noise to get you out of danger in record time.

Of course, everyone still loves the small dog breeds because their love, friendship and cuteness more than makes up for their time consuming needs.

Here is a list of some of the most common small dog breeds that you will hear about in the dog community. Please keep in mind that there are more than one hundred small dog breeds and this list is not comprehensive.

10. Maltese

Maltese Top 10 Small Dog Breeds

Maltese are one of the most famous small dog breeds. They are easily recognizable with their long and straight coat, which always needs to look prim and proper (or else it might get tangled and matted!). They are not heavy shedders, which makes them a great option for those who are allergic to dogs. They are also very friendly with children, other dogs and even cats, which makes this small breed a very popular breed amongst ones with families and other pets. Maltese like spending a lot of time with their humans are don’t do so well when let alone for long periods of time. People who want to get small dog breeds like the Maltese must research their genealogy because over breeding has caused behavioral problems in some Maltese.

9. Boston Terriers

 Top 10 Small Dog Breeds
Boston Terriers are considered part of the small dog breeds. They make great family pets because they are friendly and get along well with most children who are mature enough to understand that a Boston needs his privacy while eating. Boston Terriers shed and need to be brushed down a couple of times a week to keep their hair from getting into everything in your house. Boston Terriers are great examples of small dog breeds that need to lead an active life. A Boston Terrier is filled with energy and if they are not allowed to run around every single day, they will develop anxiety. An anxious Boston Terrier can become destructive and chew on your clothes, shoes and even the couch! In general, even without anxiety, Boston Terriers love to chew and so it is a good idea to give them a chew toy that can keep them mentally stimulated.

They need a lot of cuddling and grooming since most of them are fluffy haired, and would require regular visits to the dentist for the health of their little teeth… most especially the pug which has a greater risk of dental problems.

I love dogs a lot but sadly, I don’t have one. But I am only nine and my mom is afraid of them. Also I’m getting 2 dogs:1 when I’m ten and 1 when I’m 16.
