Airedale Terriers are working dogs that really believe in the motto of working hard and playing hard. They have a lot of energy, which keeps them active throughout the entire day. They are great family dogs because they are very protective of their families and people that they love. They are also extremely alert dogs that make great watchdogs since they will bark at every single noise that they can hear at your door. The Airedale Terrier Temperament is such that they are people pleasers who love to be around people at all times, run and play around with children, as well as sit down with you to be able to get a belly rub when they are done with all the play time. Basically, being able to get any kind of interactions with human beings keeps them happy all day long!
Are Airedale Terriers Good Family Dogs?
Airedale Terriers are great for families that have children but one thing to remember is that they might try to exert dominance over children. This problem can easily be solved if they are socialized with children from an early age and know how their relationships with children should be like, as well as the fact that children are not to be dominated over.
The Airedale Terrier temperament is such that they need to be able to get a lot of mental and physical activities. That being said, unless their owners are going to be taking them out to give them a good work out, they should not be living in apartments or condominiums. They need to have plenty of room to be able to run every single day and be able to get their nervous energy out of them. The Airedale Terrier temperament is also well suited for a hunter since they love hunting, playing hide and seek, fetching and even being able to just retrieve whatever has been thrown away form them.
Are Airedale Terriers Easy to Train?
Given that the Airedale Terriers require a lot of physical activities as well as physical stimulation, it is recommended that they should be enrolled in basic obedience classes when they are puppies. The owners need to be confident enough to be able to conduct basic obedience at school as well as at home. They can very willing to be trained if they are treated with a lot of positive reinforcement and if they know that rewards in the form of treats await them! They love to be the alpha dog (meaning, be dominant) if possible, so make sure that you always exert confidence and let them know that you are the one in charge! The Airedale Terrier Temperament is best suited for training that takes place in short intervals, and in repeated drill-style tasks. They need to have the short sessions that will keep their attention span!
The Airedale Terrier temperament is such that barking is a common complaint that their owners have. They will bark at strangers at all times but this bark is also extended to strangers, other animals, cars, your neighbors, and everyone else that they meet daily. This is why it is important to train them early to be able to stop their barking on command.
Are Airedale Terriers Good Apartment Dogs?
The Airedale Terrier temperament also makes it common for these dogs to try to chase things for example, other animals, cars and even small animals in the yard. This is why it is important to have a fenced in yard, so that they cannot go out of the yard when they are really excited and chasing a noise that they hear because that could prove to be dangerous to their health. This also means that they should be on their leashes if they are going to be going out for walks and runs.
The Airedale Temperament does not handle boredom well. if bored, they can start to dig and create massive holes in the yard. They can also chew up a ton of things, including shoes and whole portions of your couch! They are also into hunting so cats and other small animals should be kept away from them for safety reasons. Since they were originally bred to be hunters, they still have a very strong hunting instinct. Finally, they should be kept busy with some amazing interactive toys or their favorite treat if you are going to go out and leave them alone for some time so that they do not develop separation anxiety.
