Are Boston Terriers Good Family Dogs?

Even though they are a small dog breed, the Boston Terrier Temperament is such that these dogs stand up for themselves. You cannot boss them around because they do not like to be teased and bullied. They can also be very jealous and possessive of everything including their humans, their spaces, their toys and their treats, so it is extremely important to stop this behavior at an early age by socializing them with children, adults and other dogs. Training can also help the Boston terrier get rid of such behavioral issues.

While it is true that the Boston Terrier Temperament is well suited for other dogs, it is also true that these dogs need time to adjust to anyone new in their house. If you are thinking of getting another dog, you need to make sure that you have socialized the two of them outside of the house first. They should also probably be introduced to each other at an early age to keep your canine friend from becoming aggressive towards their new buddy.

The Boston Terrier Temperament also had a sensitive bit to it. This is why when you are training them (which you must do!) it is important to do so with a calm and consistent voice. They respond well to treats and positive reinforcement and really do not like to hear a harsh tone of voice. They also get bored very easily and so it is important to keep training short, varied and sweet! You can train them for multiple sessions a day, however, just make sure they’re not long. The Boston Terrier is a very smart breed and can understand your commands very easily. They do not need to be yelled at because that is a strategy that never works with any dogs.

Are Boston Terriers Good Apartment Dogs?

Boston Terriers are an active dog breed, so they need to be exercised on a daily basis so that they do not become a troublemaker in the household. Often times they are high-strung and might try to tear up couches, clothes and their own toys when they are bored and don’t know what to do with themselves. You can reduce and remove this kind of behavior by giving them a purpose in life, some tasks (like finding the hidden treat) and some awesome active exercise time (like a jog in the park!). They need regular walk and play sessions.

Even though Boston Terrier Temperament is suited for apartment living, they need to be given some leash-free running time when they can get all their energy out. If this is not something you can do, you should not get a Boston Terrier. It helps to have a yard that is fenced in where the Boston Terrier can run around.
