The Chesapeake Bay Retriever Temperament is that of a friendly dog with a strong personality. They have an independent streak that makes them not as easy going as other breeds out there. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever temperament makes them some of the hardest dogs to train despite the fact that they are very intelligent dogs. They have the temperament of a hunting dog and love to work in the fields beside their human partners. They also love to swim in the water and are the best-known water retriever dogs. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is suited for spending entire days retrieving ducks, sticks, balls and smaller animals from the tough, frigid water. They are meant to be companion dogs to people who love to spend their time in the outdoors. If you are active, you should get a Chesapeake Bay retriever. They would love to join you on an uphill hike, biking, running, jogging, or for a day swim! The Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s temperament also makes them a great dog that can tag along with you when you’re going camping out in the wild. They are very protective outdoor dogs!
Being hunting and working dogs, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever need a lot of activities to keep their temperament stable and happy. They need to have rigorous exercise, which means a walk or two around the block for a couple of times a day will not do them much good. They love to hunt so it is a great idea to take them to a wooded area for a couple of hours walk where they can run around chasing birds and sniffing for a hunt. They are also happy chasing sticks and being able to catch a Frisbee that has been thrown their direction.
Are Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Good Apartment Dogs?
The Chesapeake Bay retriever temperament makes them a terrible apartment dog. They are too independent and strong-willed to be in an apartment. If you live in an apartment or a condominium and want to own this dog breed, you need to make sure that you are living close enough to a wooded area and a river where you can take your dog daily. If they do not get their daily dose of exercise, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers can become quite destructive and aggressive. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever temperament makes them rowdy and rambunctious. They need to have the time and space to let go of their pent up energy.
Are Chesapeake Bay Retrievers Easy To Train?
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever temperament makes them a strong willed breed that is challenging to train. A lot of people tend to confuse them with Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, which are dogs that love to please people and can easily be trained. This is not true for Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. That being said, they are extremely intelligent which makes them highly trainable. Since they need to get a lot of energy out, it is useful to train them for advanced obedience and agility courses., We have friends with Chesapeake Bay Retrievers that have been trained to retrieve pretty much anything in any weather out of any location!
