English Springer Spaniels are happy dogs that love to smile. They are a very zesty dog breed! They love to spend time with their people and get along well is people of all ages, including the elderly, small children and toddlers.
The English Springer Spaniel Temperament is that of a hunting dog because that is what they were bred to do. Today, they still love to be able to work in the fields. They also like being able to track and stalk birds in the backyard. Given that they were bred to be hunting dogs, the English Spring Spaniel is very attentive and alert. The smallest of noises will get their attention and make them stop on their tracks. Their tracking abilities also make them a little bit of a messy dog since they track dirt and water throughout their house. That being said, their charming, sweet personalities, smiling faces and wagging tails more than make up for this deficit! Are English Springer Spaniels Good Family Dogs?
The English Springer Spaniel Temperament is well suited for other dogs, cats and household pets if they have been trained from a young age to be around them. They need to be socialized so that they do not get distracted and pose danger to other animals since they do have a hunting instinct.
The English Springer Spaniel Temperament also makes them a great watchdog. Since their hunting instinct makes them very alert, they will bark and let you know if there is something at the door. Are English Springer Spaniels Good Apartment Dogs?
The English Springer Spaniel needs to lead quite an active lifestyle. This means that they might need to go on runs every single day. They were bred to be spending a majority of their time on the fields bunting birds, and so as a household pet it is possible that they will have more energy than they know what to do with. If they are not allowed to do some sort of strenuous exercise daily, such as running, jogging, hiking, or swimming, If they are not allowed to run daily, they can also become destructive by bouncing around the house, barking, chewing up valuable things and generally making up a nuisance out of himself or herself. The puppies have even more energy than an adult dog. They can be even more rowdy than the adults! What’s amazing though is that if kids are taught to play catch and fetch with the English Springer Spaniel, they can become forever friends while playing together and relieve the adult from some of the responsibilities. That being said, adults should always supervise interactions between their dogs and smaller children.
Are English Springer Spaniels Easy to Train?
The English Springer Spaniel Temperament makes them relatively easy to train. They are smart dogs that are able to learn very quickly since they have a strong desire to please their parents. Given their hunting dog temperament, English Springer Spaniels can sometimes get distracted very easily by noises and this can be frustrating while training them. It is important to train them to get past the distractions in life so that they can be safe in times of danger. If you have lots of treats in hand and have patience, the English Springer Spaniel can be very well trained and disciplined! Harsh demeanor will not get you anywhere with these guys. It will only make them mistrust you. It is so much better to give them tons of positive reinforcement.
Due to a lot of indiscriminate breeding practices in recent years, English Springer Spaniels have been accused of having very uneven temperaments, serious aggression issues, and rage. Sometimes these kinds of behaviors are not apparent in the dog until they are about two years of age. Some people believe that these behavioral issues have risen due to brain seizures, but a proven cause is still unknown. These aggression issues make it very important to get your English Springer Spaniel from a very reputable breeder. If you are adopting an English Springer Spaniel, adopt one that is four years old or older. Make sure to do as much research as possible about their bloodline and background in order to ensure that you and your English Springer Spaniel can have a wonderful, healthy and happy life together.
The English Springer Spaniel temperament is also such that they can easily get separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. This can cause them to become destructive because they are bored and lonely. It is useful to keep them distracted with their favorite treats and toys while you leave the house, to take them to a dog daycare or to take them with you!
