The Golden Retriever is known to be a great watchdog but not so good of a guard-dog. They are very alert and loyal, and so they will for sure let you know when someone is at the door. That being said, they are also very playful and friendly. Thus, they love strangers and will not stop them from coming near you! In fact, they might welcome some strangers in to play with them. They love people way too much to be effective guard dogs.
Are Golden Retrievers Good Family Dogs?
The Golden Retriever is known as a classic, All-American family dog. They are obedient, playful, well mannered and intelligent. They get along really well with children because they so full of love. Due to their friendly nature, Golden Retrievers are known to interact really well with other pets.
The Golden Retriever is a very intelligent dog. This makes it easy for them to be in the highest levels of obedience classes. They are often also nominated at champions in competitive sports for dogs (and drooling is not the only one that they can win!).
Do not be fooled by the friendly temperament of a Golden Retriever. Golden Retrievers were bred to be reliable bird dogs. This is because they have a keen sense of smell. They also have an eagerness to please their masters, which makes them really great companion dogs. Their desire to work has also made them highly sough after narcotics sniffers. There is more to them than that golden fur will give away!
Are Golden Retrievers Easy to Train?
Golden Retrievers are very easy to train. Again, they are people pleasers, which make them want to do anything for you and with you! Any bit of praise will win that Golden Retriever’s heart. Of course, a little bit of food always helps the situation as well. Golden Retrievers should always be treated gently because they are very sensitive creatures. They do not respond well to harsh tones and discipline. They need to be loved and require your patience.
One of the biggest concerns new Golden Retrievers’ humans have is in training them to walk on a leash. Golden Retrievers are free souls by nature and need to be trained in this regard. From an early age, they need to be taught proper leash walking because if this is not done, they will start to pull on the leash while you walk them. You would not want to be pulled by the gigantic seventy-pound ball of fluff! You want to be their master and their leader, not their follower.
