Wellness is a dog food brand produced by the Old Mother Hubbard Company based in Massachusetts, USA.  It produces both dry and canned foods which are tailored to satisfy specific nutritional profiles of different ages and special nutritional requirements of dogs. At present there are three Wellness Core product lines—the Wellness Core Ocean Formula, Wellness Core Original Formula, and Wellness Core Reduced Fat Formula.

The Wellness Petfood website states that the “Wellness CORE is based on the raw feeding philosophy of providing nutrient-rich, high-quality meat to a dog’s diet”.

The basic ingredients of Wellness dog food is a grain-free formula that incorporates only meat from deboned chicken and turkey, chicken meal, turkey meal, and chicken liver.

Like any raw meat incorporated into feed rations, turkey and chicken meat which are the main sources of protein possess 80% water in its raw form. Upon processing, the water content is lost and what’s left is meat which is about 20% of its original weight.

However turkey meal and chicken meal are considered meat concentrates and are better sources of animal protein because they contain almost 300% more protein compared to their raw forms.

Potato is a good source of complex carbohydrates. Chicken liver when incorporated in sufficient levels is also a good source of additional protein and important nutrients.

Among the Wellness dog food ingredients, canola oil and tomato pomace are considered quite controversial. Tomato pomace is a by-product when manufacturing tomato catsup, juice, or soup. Although it has a high fiber content it is often treated as an inexpensive filler which may be laden with pesticides. On the other hand, canola oil which is considered high in omega-3 has also been deemed an unhealthy fat by some people.

The minerals which have been included in the Wellness dog food formulas are chelated thus the body can better assimilate and use the minerals in the different physiological processes in the body.

Probiotics have also been added after processing to infuse beneficial bacteria which have been lost during processing.

The Wellness dog food series have met the AAFCO nutrient profiles for maintenance of adult dogs.

Customer Reviews of Wellness Treats:

Positive Reviews:

There are a lot of positive reviews from satisfied customers of Wellness dog food products. Aside from the high quality ingredients, owners love the grain-free formula which is good for dogs which are constantly experiencing bloat and other digestive abnormalities. Many owners reported that their dogs had better appetites and more energy.

Negative Reviews:

As for negative feedbacks, some owners report about digestive disturbances when making the switch from one brand to Wellness. This may be attributed to the failure of some owners to gradually incorporate the Wellness dog food into their pet’s diet.

Other owner said that his dog refused to eat unless his dog was really starving and it made the dog’s stools soft.

There are also reports bags, which had insects and cobwebs inside, but these incidents are probably due to the storage conditions of wholesalers and distributors and not during the processing and packing of the dog food. Bunk the puppy pug has had nothing but positive experience with Wellness Products and treats.

Bunk’s Experience with Wellness Treats:

Wellness is very healthy food for your pugs and all dogs. The great thing about them is that they try to use as much natural ingredients as possible. This tells me that they are concerned about your pug dog’s health. You can find their food in all shapes and sizes for all kinds of canines. Please make sure that you choose wisely. Think about two things while you are choosing the proper Wellness treat or food for your dog.

Firstly, what favors does your pug usually like? Bunk loves salmon and lamb and so we usually get that for him. As you might know already, pugs are not very picky. They will eat anything. USUALLY. We have fed Bunk many different kinds of Wellness products and he usually gobble-gobbles on them for 2 seconds before swallowing them! If your pug is pickier, you might want to consider which flavor to get.

Secondly, as with all other products, consider the size of the puppy or dog you are trying to feed before buying them dog food.

We bought bunk these treats by mistake once without reading the packet first. Of course, it is lamb and salmon so he loved it. At the same time, these are some HUGE treats so we ended up needing to break each treat up into 4 pieces (which were still big pieces) before being able to feed them to him. Had we bought these treats instead, we would have puppy food that he could eat without us having to break them up first.

Wellness makes not only nutritious and yummy dog food but also USEFUL dog treats. They have these that are about 1/2 an inch long and 1/2 an inch wide. We noticed that these were the best treats for training Bunk the “Leave it” and “Drop it” commands. These treats are big which means they are more noticeable and smell a lot more as well. We would put in on the ground and wait till he runs towards it. When he noticed and ran towards it we would say leave it and he would leave it. As soon as he left it we would give him a smaller treat for reward. You might be saying this is something we could have done with other treats too though. Why is Wellness special? Wellness treats are very well crafted and not as soft and mushy as other treats. If our puppy pug jumped towards it and did not listen to the leave it command, we could put our food down on it without being worried about breaking it or having it stuck to the carpet. I have learned to appreciate this because its not like a biscuit that is hard but also not sticky and super sort. The consistency is just perfect!

BEWARE: Too much Wellness might cause diarrhea for dogs. Bunk’s poop became softer when we were feeding him a ton of wellness treats. This is why now we only break them into small pieces and occasionally give it to him. This should not be as problem if you are feeding your puppy or dog a variety of treats like you should Insert Different Dog Treats Article Here. That being said, if you give it to your pug dog in the recommended size they should be perfectly fine! Just check their stool to see if this awesome, healthy recipe is suitable for them.
